Pre-Departure Information

To receive country specific information regarding safety, insurance and other important information, please go to: www.travel.state.gov and search by country.

Checklist
  1. Passport
Apply for your passport at United States Post Office. If this is your 1st time applying, you will need to submit a birth certificate, photo ID, 2 color passport photos and $85. Please allow 4-6 weeks for passport preparation. For more information on how to obtain a passport, please visit http://www.usps.com/passport/welcome.htm
When you receive your passport make sure to give a copy to the Study Abroad Coordinator to keep it in your file in case of emergency.
  2. Purchase ISIC card (optional). See ISIC section under travel.
  3. Apply for a Student Visa
Each country has different rules and charges for visa applications. Some countries may require a medical examination. Fees will vary by country. Please call the nearest consulate in Chicago for specific application and procedures
  4. Make your travel plans
You can make travel arrangements by first checking with your local travel agent. If you purchase the ISIC, you are eligible for the discounted student airfares at Council Travel, www.counciltravel.com or STA Travel, www.statravel.com. Reserve your tickets as early as you can because rates usually rise the closer you get to your departure date. Make sure you double check the arrival dates of the host institution and when the semester begins to plan accordingly.
  5. Packing
Most airlines will allow you to check through 2 pieces of luggage whose combined total external dimensions do not exceed 162 inches with the total weight not to exceed 70 lbs. You are also allowed to take one piece of carry-on luggage.

    Useful packing tips:
    • Lay out everything you plan to take on the bed and cut it in half. You will have to carry everything you pack!
    • Don't carry all of your valuables in the same place
    • Pack toiletries and other necessities in your carry-on
    • Take copies of passport, insurance and medical prescriptions with you and keep in a safe place.
    • Recommended: Buy a money belt that can go around your waist or neck to hold important items, ie: passport, airplane tickets, etc.
